Since writing my “Blarticle“, I have been contacted by many readers asking, “How do you make a blog?” (or write a blarticle). I began a 2 part beginner series, making it easy for readers to understand blogging and how to get started. In this article, we look at how to actually create your blog.
It’s easier than you think. Here is a very basic and simple 3 step process to help you on your way in no time. First of all, apart from the basics, don’t spend all your time on making your site look perfect.
My motto has always been – get your content down and you can pretty up your site later. Some of the most unattractive sites are getting thousands of hits because they have interesting content, while ‘pretty’ sites look great, but have a high bounce rate because there is not enough content to keep the reader interested.
1. Choose Which Platform Suits You the Best
There are plenty of free blogging software sites that you can use, so that you can start blogging without spending a cent. You can use Blogger, Wix, Weebly or WordPress. There are many others, but these are quite popular. Personally, I would recommend WordPress for the simple reason that in the blogosphere, I’m seeing a lot of people who begin blogging for fun. They soon get hooked and further into it and find they need to transfer their original site into a hosted WordPress account. This can be time consuming and costly. If you begin with WordPress from the beginning, you won’t have that problem down the track.
2. Setting Up WordPress
Decide if you want your own domain name (eg. www.Tan-Ja.com) or whether you are happy to begin with a free website (eg.www.Tan-Ja.wordpress.com). To begin with, try the free one to see if you like it. Follow these steps to get started:
a) Visit the WordPress.com site and get started. You will have to create an account, but they will step you through it.
b) Once you have your site, and have logged in, go to appearance on the left hand side hover across until you see themes. Choose your theme. You can do a search for writer or blog and see what comes up. Once you have chosen your theme, you can activate it and save it. Remember, you can change the theme anytime and you won’t lose your content.
c) Explore your appearance and theme options. You can change headers and titles and tag lines.
3. Begin A Blog Post
To begin your first blog post, click on Post, then add new. Put in your title and your content. Explore other blog posts to see how they set out their blog and make sure you try adding media.
